Hello (My Introduction)

“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings.”

Lewis Carroll — Through the Looking-Glass

Hello, readers.  I am Rachael the writer, but you can call me Rae –most people don’t, so this is new, much like my blog. I am starting this blog because that is what most Millennial writers do – write blogs with the hope that a wonderful writing agent miraculously takes notice of them (wink wink to any agent reading this). So ta da, here I am despite the fact that I am an old fashioned granny in the body of a 24-year-old. Yes I prefer my books in hardcover or paperback, and I like to speak to my friends in person rather than in the comment section of a Facebook post. However, I do enjoy the ease of e-books and I spend hours on Facebook, but mostly to procrastinate. So now, like other things, I have conceded and I’ll drink the blogging Kool-Aid.

I have been contemplating for years about writing a blog, but I could not figure out what I wanted to write about. My areas of interest are huge. I have spent the majority of my time in university flittering from major to major just because there was too much out there that I wanted to learn. I eventually settled into a BA in Literature and Gender Studies, but as these subjects are quite broad, they still did not help me narrow down my blogging topic. So, since my interests are vast and varying, I decided to dedicate my blog to the one constant in my life – my love of writing and the day to day difficulties of being an unpublished author.

I know the title of this blog would be quite confusing. For those of you who are not a fan of Lewis Carroll I’m sure you were expecting the Queen of England’s recipes for steamed cabbage. Sorry to disappoint. Books have been an intrinsic part of my life, so I had to dedicate this blog to the first poem I ever memorised, the Walrus and the Carpenter. I hope one day some dreaming writer will dedicate something to a piece of my literary work, but a girl can only dream.

A little bit about me, I am a 24-year-old Trinidadian writer who spends equal parts of her life working, day dreaming, studying and sleeping. Sometimes the four are interconnected, but that’s a topic for a different post. I am a journalist by trade, a day dreamer by profession, an avid involved reader and a career student. On the days that I manage to write down the fairy-tales dancing around in my head I call myself an author.

Writing for me has never come easy. The dreams were fluid, but the words would back up in my brain like a clogged pipe. Being dyslexic does not help, but some misspelled words never stopped anyone from writing stuff down. It certainly was not going to stop me. The real problem I have as a writer is my ferocious urge to procrastinate. Like I said, it took me years to open a WordPress account. Of course while writing this blog I contemplated taking a nap, scrolled through Facebook, actually took a nap, lost my glasses while napping and became very relieved that I did not break my glasses during my nap, watched television, had a snack, found my glasses under my bed and watched some more television. That’s a lot to do while you are procrastinating. I consider myself a professional multi-tasking procrastinator, but I do well with deadlines. Nothing is more inspiring than the last minute pressure. Writing at the last minute stops me from overthinking, so I write exactly the words that I want to say. I hope that in this blog I will be able to write everything I would like to say to you.

So, here I am, a writer, ready for you to read. I hope you enjoy.

With all my heart,

Rae Ewenheart

P.S. Stay tuned for some original poems and prose from me.

  1. Welcome to the life of blogging, lady.

  2. Can’t wait to see what you offer in your little corner of the internet. 🙂

  3. Blogs are cooler with lots of lists (no bias) 😀

  4. As a 16 year old I loved Dylan Thomas and still enjoy reading his couplets.
I surpose it lies in the translation that the gays in your writing are referred to as “queer” In Australia that would be considered an insult.
I like your line.. it is the character of a person that is important not who they love. ..And extending this to say how can you truly love another if you don’t love your self. Even further how can you experience orgasm with another if you cannot experience it by your own expression of self love.

    1. David, yeah different cultures would have different connotations to the word queer. Queer can be seen as a derogatory word by some, but I think a lot of people have tried to reclaim to word into a more positive meaning. In Trinidad queer is the least of the insults a person could throw at a gay person. As a gender student I have never seen queer as a bad thing, but a word that helps accept everyone. But I understand the sentiments people in Australia would feel.
I love your point on self love, and I might just explore it more in my writing.

Than you for taking the time to read my blog.

  5. Hi
Please do, I really like your style. I agree with your points on dyslexia and procrastination . Having a similar focus or lack of it creates confusion and definitely the need to set deadlines and meetings.
Creativity surges out longing for definition.
So please Rae tell us more about your world!!!
